Crochet Christmas Snowman

Easy beginners pattern and tutorial

Where would Christmas be without a crochet snowman to hang on your tree?

Following on from our other crochet tutorials (cupcake and Halloween pumpkin), our resident crochet and knitting blogger Esra from Salford has this time turned her attentions to Frosty the Snowman.

Over to you Esra ……

Today was a perfect winter day; crispy cold with a bright sun.

There is something great about wearing a coat and sunglasses all it once!

I am hoping it starts snowing soon. I just cannot wait to see everywhere covered in white.

And so to get you in the snowy mood, I’ve prepared a special winter pattern for you – a SNOWMAN!

Crochet Pattern

Level: Beginners

Supplies: All you need is: Crochet hook size 6, three colours of DK yarn (white, red and orange), scissors, two coloured buttons, two black crystals for eyes, a needle and a thread, and some stuffing.

Abbreviations:

  • Rnd: Round
  • Ch: Chain
  • SS: Slip stitch
  • DC: Double crochet

The crochet language: (UK crochet)

Start with the snowman’s head:

  • Ch4
  • (CHAIN: to make a chain put the yarn over the hook then pull it down into the loop)
  • Rnd1: ss from loop in hook to first loop in the ch to form a ring
  • (SLIP STITCH: you do a slip stitch by entering the hook into the last stitch and pulling the yarn from under it to the loop on the hook)
  • Rnd2: ch1, dc around the ring (total of 8 stitches)
  •  (DOUBLE CROCHET:  to make a double crochet stitch, enter the hook into the ring and pull the thread from the bottom of the ring to the top, then you will have two loops on the hook. Put the yarn over the hook and pull it into both loops).
  • Rnd3: ch1, 2dc in each stitch (total 16 stitches)
  • Rnd4: ch1, 1 dc, 1 dc, 2 dc (do two normal db in each stitch then 2 dc in the third one to make the circle bigger)
  • Rnd5-10: ch1, 1dc in each (these rounds will give the circular shape for the head).
  • Rnd6: we will decrease in this step to close off the head, 1 dc, 1 dc, skip one, and do it all around that line. In other words you will crochet two stitches then jump over one to do another two and so on.
  • Add stuffing then continue decreasing till you close the head. Leave a bit of the thread for sewing later.

The Body:

  • Ch6
  • Rnd1: ss from loop in hook to first loop in the ch to form a ring
  • Rnd2: ch1, dc around the ring (total of 10 stitches)
  • Rnd3: ch1, 2dc in each stitch (total 20 stitches)
  • Rnd4-5: ch1, 1 dc, 1 dc, 2 dc (do two normal db in each stitch then 2 dc in the third one to make the circle bigger)
  • Rnd6-12: ch1, 1dc in each (these rounds will give the oval shape for the body).
  • Rnd13: we will decrease in this step to close off the head, 1 dc, 1 dc, skip one, and do it all around that line. In other words you will crochet two stitches then jump over one to do another two and so on.
  • Add stuffing then continue decreasing till you close the body.

OK! Now you got a head and a body, you have two options, you can either sew them together or crochet them together by the remaining thread from the head, and you can do that by doing a slip stitch connecting the head with the body.

The red scarf:

This one is the easiest crochet scarf EVER,

  • Ch 20
  • Dc each one and that’s it!

The eyes, nose and mouth:

I used black crystals for the eyes and I used a special glue heater to stick them, but you can also use sew in crystals.

The nose is just a couple of rounds of simple crochet using orange wool and the smile was simply sewn in using black thread.

The buttons:

Just used a normal thread and needle or you can just glue them!

You can add a yarn thread in the back of the snowman to hang it around the house or better on your Christmas tree!
