Christmas Nail Art Tutorials

Easy tutorials for perfect festive nails

We sent regular guest blogger Victoria off to get creative and give her nails a Christmas make-over. Follow her easy tutorial to recreate this look to welcome the beginning of the festivities. She’s also rounded up her top three Christmassy tutorials to give you even more inspiration.

Over to you Victoria ……

Victoria

Christmas is all about decoration!

Not just putting the tree and tinsel up around your house but also adding some colour and festive sparkle to your nails.

We have an easy tutorial for snowman themed nails inspired by Disney’s latest film release, Frozen, that your children will love showing off to their friends.

nail art montage

Step 1

Apply a base coat to the nails – clear or white work best.

Step 2

The next stage is to add some sparkle.

Here I used a Barry M in white from their new glitter effects range. For full effect, apply two or three coats and leave until completely dry.

The sparkles and pieces of glitter in this nail varnish really help in creating the desired effect of snow.

Step 3

Now that the nails have dried completely, it’s time to get creative.

A nail art pen works best for this part, as you need a fine point in which to draw. Again, I used a black one from the Barry M range.

Start by drawing on two big eyes, and then add smaller circles in a semi-circle to form the mouth. Leave five minutes for this to dry before moving onto the next step.

Step 4

This is the penultimate stage in making your snowman come to life.

You will need a bright orange nail varnish to create his carrot nose. To form the right shape, you are best using an angled tool – such the pointy end of a cocktail stick.

Dip it into the paint and wipe off any excess. Proceed to gently press the paint-covered end onto the middle of the nail.

I only added the snowman to one nail, but if you want the complete look, repeat the previous stages on each nail.

Step 5

Your festive nails are now complete! But don’t forget to seal the deal with a clear top coat to avoid chipping.

Indulge Fragrance Boutique

Promising a new boutique way to buy perfume

It’s been a while since I asked my husband to sniff me!

“Go on!” I urged “Give me a sniff – now what do you think it smells of?”

Perplexed he said “Hmm – very nice!”

“No – what can you smell?” I persisted.

“Vanilla, flowers ….. er ……..nice?”

I took my arm away from him and said “That – my dear is the smell of One Direction!”

One Direction Perfume

And therein lies the problem with perfumes. There is no world-wide vocabulary or measurement for smell. And there is no guarantee that two different people will smell things in the same way and at the same ‘volume’.

All of which conspire to me wearing the same perfume now that I was 10 years ago. I found something that I liked – I couldn’t face trying out a host of others that would frankly just confuse my nose. And the thought of running the gauntlet of ‘the squibbing zone’ in department stores leaves me cold.

Which is a shame as the sense of smell is so evocative. Because of the way it’s wired into your brain, a smell can transport you instantly back to a place, a time, a feeling!

Your fragrance should say things about you – it should finish off your outfit.

Choosing fragrances

Choosing fragrances, I’ve come to learn, is a bit like choosing wine, but with an additional dimension. Like wine you can list the aromas that you recognise – rose, musk, orange blossom. But with fragrances there’s the additional ‘tasting notes’ of the marketing!

A fragrance sums up a mood, or image.

Gwyneth Paltrow Boss Jour

Take Gwyneth Paltrow – if you want something clean, crisp, white, understated, fresh and structured (just like Gwynnies perfectly contained Germanic image) then you’re going to be attracted to Boss Jour.

Cindy Crawford Angel

However, if you want to make an impact, the deeper, powerful, dramatic, sensual, overflowing sight of Cindy Crawford advertising Thierry Mugler’s Angel might be what does it for you.

I have to say that I wear Angel – and I look just like Cindy Crawford (eh-hem!)

What that says about One Direction’s new fragrance Our Moment I’m not quite sure? It breaks the mould because it doesn’t smell of teenage boys, it actually smells rather nice. Though I’m deterred from actually buying a bottle because I think it would officially make me a cougar!

Indulge Fragrance

Indulge Fragrance, next to Victoria’s Secrets on the first floor of The Trafford Centre tells us to expect an altogether different fragrance shopping experience, with a greater emphasis on education, information and support to stop you from feeling overwhelmed and help you find the right fragrance for you.

Along with the ‘tasting notes’ of advertising along side the bottle, the idea is that you should browse, try and have all the information you need to make an informed choice, instead of a quick ‘spray and run’.

Indulge Fragrances

Indulge Fragrances

I didn’t get the opportunity to try the full fragrance boutique choosing experience at the launch – but if the staff are as informative as Will Andrews, a Principle Scientist in the Fine Fragrance R&D Team at Procter & Gamble who spoke at the launch event, then the ladies of Manchester are in for a treat.

It was fascinating to chat to him about how fragrances are developed for particular brands and how a brief for a particular fragrance from a client is interpreted and the fragrance developed. He really does have The Scent of a Woman!

Competition Time

I was given a very generous goody bag at the event, which I’m offering as four competition prizes.

Perfumes

  • Guerlain, La Petite Robe Noire Eau de Toilette. An exquisite fragrance. La Petite Robe Noire Eau de Toilette is utterly delightful. Rose, jasmine and orange blossom lead the dance, boldly escorted by cherry, apple, blackcurrant and a shower of green notes to intensify the fragrant trail. Finally tempting notes of white amber reveal themselves in a swathe of delicate, silky musk.
  • Giorgio Armani, Sì. Chic, sultry, intense and soft at the same time, Sì is a chypre scent reinvented, lingering on the skin and captivating the senses. It’s olfactory signature is rhythmic, elegant and unique. It combines an inflection of three accords: cassis nectar, modern chypre and light musky wood.
  • Hugo Boss, BOSS. A classic and entirely masculine fragrance, it is unmistakably elegant and stylish. The BOSS man defines his own meaning of success. He is confident and strong but won’t hesitate to reveal his more spontaneous and emotional side. The immediate BOSS fragrance experience is fruity and fresh, but soon develops into a warm woody sensual release. As timeless and sleek as the fashion house that inspired it, the fragrance is definitively Boss. Bottled.
  • Thierry Mugler’s A*Men. A woody dimension with a deep, powerful soul. A blend of peppermint and lavender, with patchouli and Atlas cedars. It also contains a fiery dimension where metallic purity and oriental warmth fuse together, with a final explosion of coffee and styrax which emerges from musk and tonka beans.

As you’ve probably guessed, I didn’t write these descriptions, and while I’m not quite sure what a tonka bean is – hopefully these descriptions will start you thinking a bit more about fragrances.

Competition question: We want to know what perfume you’re currently wearing?

Me? As I’ve already mentioned, it’s Thierry Mugler’s Angel. And it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the bottle matches my bedroom. Honest!

Pop it in the comments box below – but only one comment per person please.

So don’t be shy – tell us what perfume’s on your dressing table.

Good luck!

Flashmob Fashion

On trend and En Vogue at Manchester Arndale

It was one of those – “I’ll understand it when I see it” type of things. So intrigued I mosied on down to the Manchester Arndale last Friday to see what all the fuss was about.

Flashmob Fashion .

.

It was actually all rather simple – and a brilliant way of creating a buzz in the Arndale for the whole weekend.

.

.

The Flashmob

From Friday through to Sunday at 20 minute intervals dancers appeared in one of four different locations around the Arndale.

Flashmob Fashin Manchester Arndale

Flashmob Fashin Manchester Arndale

Flashmob Fashin Manchester Arndale

Dancing to either Mark Ronson’s Stop MeDepeche Mode’s Personal Jesus or Blake Lewis Your Touch - it was all very cool!

Check out this video, which has been cut and set to En Vogue (one of my favourite tunes).

I must admit I was quite tempted to jump onto the revolving dance floor myself and recreate ‘Dead or Alive’s’ You Spin Me Round – but then I thought better of it. Memories of a drunken hen weekend in Newcastle in a night club on a boat ….. but that’s a different story!

Each performance was linked to a particular store. Decked out in their clothes, the dancers strutted, vogued and popped, while 25 envelopes were handed out to members of the watching crowd – one of which contained a rather generous £50.00 voucher for that particular store.

Happy hour

It was only once in the store linked to that particular flashmob that the winning envelope was announced – and for those who weren’t a winner (and for any other member of the general public) many of the stores then ran an offer for the next 60 minutes with up to 20% off!

Flashmob Fashion Manchester Arndale

How happy was I to discover that my visit coincided with a 20% discount happy hour in Monsoon – and me with a wedding to go to the next day and an outfit to buy! Now what are the chances of that!

Style Salon in Hallé Square

Meanwhile, Hallé Square was set out with hair, beauty and fragrance stations, from the likes of Bumble & Bumble, Hotel Chocolat, Body Shop and Lush. All completely free and all willing to transform you into your most glamorous self!

I plumped for Lush cosmetics and was treated to a spot of colour therapy. I was told to shut my eyes and imagine a white room – and then open them and pick the first three colours that jumped out at me.

Lush Colour Wheel

Each colour came with it’s own meaning and description. Seeing mine, it’s no wonder I managed to buy a whole wedding outfit in 15 minutes!

Prizes were on offer too in The Style Salon – and along with pop up boutiques from Evans and Simply Be offering body shape consultations, it was all going on!

alstaples's FlashmobFashion album on Photobucket

I loved the whole concept – as did the crowds of shoppers who watched the goings on intently. It was a great way of livening up the Arndale and bringing fashion and style out from behind the shop fronts and to the shoppers.

I’m looking forward to the next one already!

Top tips for perfect party nails

If you want to have a go at getting perfect party nails yourself – here are my top tips:

  • Remove any old nail polish, if any!
  • File nails to desired shape and length, file in one direction to avoid damaging nail.
  • Push cuticles back – soften first with oil or lotion and gently push back.
  • Exfoliate hands with hand scrub to remove any dead skin, then wash hands.
  • Moisturise hands then wipe each nail with nail polish remover to remove any lotion and oil.
  • Apply base coat, this protects the nails and prevents chipping.
  • Now for a splash of colour! Apply chosen colour, being sure to paint down to your cuticles, and into the corner sides of your nails. Try not to touch the sides, but don’t worry  if you do.
  • Wait two minutes between coats.
  • Lastly apply a top coat. This will protect the colour from chipping and give you a beautiful shine.
  • If any polish has gone on your skin, wrap an orange stick end with some cotton wool and with a little nail varnish remover gently remove the stray polish.

See you all soon

Let’s meet Laura ……

Hi I’m Laura and I’m a Senior Lifestyle Consultant for Temple Spa.

I teach skin therapy classes in the Manchester and Cheshire area through our exclusive service, Spa2go.

Ladies, let me tell you, if you haven’t heard of Temple Spa, then you’re in for a treat!

Temple Spa is THE brand to be discovered. We currently sell our gorgeous skincare products in Harrods and Selfridges in London. But if you’d like to get your hands on them up here in the North, you can do so through me.

I’ve been teaching classes in the Manchester and Cheshire area for six months and the reception has been amazing. I’ve had fantastic feedback and my clients keep coming back for more and more!

Now it’s your turn to find out about this fabulous brand ……

Temple Spa has the most luxurious, anti-ageing skincare and spa therapy products to offer. And the best thing about them is that they actually do what they say on the tin…or bottle to be exact!

How many times have you visited the beauty counter and gone away with hundreds of pounds worth of skincare, only to find that it isn’t for you?

Temple Spa moisture matte

You’re disappointed that it doesn’t perform or that you’ve broken out in a nasty rash. So it just sits there in your bathroom cabinet. It’s money down the drain!

At a Temple Spa class, you invite eight of your friends and pour a glass of fizz.

Sounds good so far doesn’t it?

I assess your skin type and prescribe a facial that’s tailored to you. You apply a cleanser, mask, toner, moisturiser and special attention products so that you can see how they feel and what they smell like.

That way, you know exactly what you’re buying, and that it’s going to work for you!

It’s a great girlie night in – and you learn little hints and tips about skincare on the way too.

At Temple Spa we believe you should make time for YOU.

Why not? You’re worth it!

Temple Spa Gifts for Mothers Day

We know you’re busy and your life is hectic but with our products, you don’t need to go to an expensive health farm or check in to a posh hotel for the weekend. You can recreate spa rituals in the comfort of your own home.

Turn that phone off, light a candle and relax in a bath full of essential oils.

Doesn’t that sound like bliss?

Come down to An Oasis in The City and sample the delights of this award-winning brand with a relaxing mini facial. Forget all the stresses and strains of day to day life and indulge in a bit of me time. You deserve to be pampered!

Temple Spa

I’ll be on hand to give you skincare advice and talk you through some of our fantastic products.

Book a class with me on the day and I’ll treat you to a lovely free gift.

I’ll have some great offers on during the event too!

I’m looking forward to seeing you there!

Simple steps for the perfect smile

Top tips from the dentist to help make the most of your natural smile

I’m delighted to welcome one of our advertisers back onto the blog today. Wendy Smythe Dental Practice is a private dental practice in the heart of Hale village.

Last time she gave us some great tips for keeping our children’s teeth healthy. Today it’s all about getting a great natural smile without having to resort to extreme measures.

Over to you Wendy ……

Wendy Smythe

In this age of plastic surgery and artifice it’s easy to become used to media images of tiny Hollywood noses, paper white teeth and broad identical smiles.

When I watch television I am amazed by the rows of over whitened teeth, so obviously crowned and veneered to an appearance far away from anything nature may have intended.

I find the whole thing silly and very unattractive. Am I alone in mourning the loss Bowie’s irregular smile and Tom Jones’s important nose?

Too much perfection is very dull and rather odd to look at.

When we look in the mirror our teeth may look yellow, irregular and imperfect by comparison to media images.

The question to ask is, are we looking at teeth which are in reality very good, but which could be tweaked a little to give us what mother nature intended only a little better?

I believe that we often have what suits our faces and with a few tiny changes we can have something altogether more attractive and more perfect without resorting to cutting down the teeth and covering them with porcelain.

Smile

So where do we start?

Brilliant white teeth are a mistake but clean shiny teeth with healthy pink gums are just lovely to see.

Visit the hygenist

The first thing to do is to find a practice with a good hygienist and visit regularly to keep the stains off and the gums healthy.

Any dentist worth their salt will attend to this before even thinking about any cosmetic changes.

Next have a look at the symmetry.

A symmetrical set of teeth is very attractive and slight irregularities and chips can be changed quickly and easily by placing little composite additions to the teeth to fool the eye. These changes are inexpensive, reversible and best of all, don’t involve cutting into good teeth. The technique is called composite bonding and can be surprisingly effective.

The other little trick with symmetry is to check the gum line. Often a little adjustment of irregular gums can make for a much improved smile and can be done in minutes with electrosurgery. These changes are often enough to transform a less than perfect smile.

Repair and replace

There will always be a place for orthodontics, tooth whitening, veneers, crowns, bridges and implants which will achieve more dramatic changes. These are wonderful to move teeth around or to repair and replace damaged teeth and can look perfectly natural when they are carefully done.

Discuss it with your dentist

The key is to find a dentist who will discuss it all with you and make sure that you feel your needs have been understood and the options explained.

As with most things in life, good communication gives good results. Dentists enjoy getting their patients involved with planning their treatment so find a dentist you get on with, ask lots of questions and get the smile you really want.
