An Oasis in the City – Bowdon

Hot in the city!

We chose the hottest day of the year for our summer An Oasis In The City out in Bowdon on Saturday. While the city was melting – we were chilling in our vintage tea garden and eating the best ice creams I’ve had in a long while.

An Oasis in the City

I was incredibly proud of all our exhibitors – the standard was amazing and the room looked beautiful. It was a fact that didn’t go unnoticed by our visitors who all seemed to leave weighed down with bags and bags of beautiful things.

.

But don’t take my word for it, one of our visitors enjoyed herself so much she felt inspired to write a review!

.

Over to you Cat ……

Cat & Sam

Sweltering under an unrelenting sun, we pushed onwards through sizzling Sale, humid Hale and blistering Bowdon.

All the way up to the A56, when we realised to our horror that we’d taken a wrong turn. We were running out of time!

Quick, I urged my husband, turn round before it’s too late!

But, just as we thought we were beaten, there it was. An oasis. An Oasis in the City. Trembling lest this mirage vanish, we parked up, saluted a newly married couple (and their dog) in the adjacent church…..and made a beeline for the door.

Happily, this was no mirage. It was a very real and absolutely splendid collection of delights all under one roof – and outside too. Having paid our £2.00 entry fee and promised the children ice cream from a real vintage ice-cream trike, we hit the room. In fact, two rooms.

After a whistle-stop tour with family in tow, my husband and I swiftly decided that the best course of action was to pacify our 6 and 3 year old boys with huge ice creams whilst we took turns to do some serious spending.

Pop Up Project Ice Cream

We tracked Ice Cream the ‘Pop Up Project‘ down to the front of the church where they were doing a roaring trade with the wedding guests, and procured what I can honestly say were probably the most delicious ice-creams we’d ever tasted – the toffee/chocolate Kurly Wurly one was to die for!

Children eating ice creams

The combination of the ice creams and a most exciting (and conveniently fenced in) outside area with lots of bushes to hide in kept our two – and several others who joined in – amused for ages.

This meant that we had plenty of opportunity to sit and partake of Vintage Afternoon Teas’ home-made cakes and tea, served on the sort of beautiful vintage china that always makes it taste better, chat to friends and have a proper nose round all the stalls.

Cake

Suffice to say I had to pop over to the pub opposite to get more cash so that I could buy all the presents I needed for friends’ kids’ upcoming birthdays, a 9-day overdue baby, and plenty for myself.

Bags! More bags! Gorgeous wooden toys! Craft! Handmade cards! Jewellery! Baby clothes! Eco-friendly garden ideas and plants!

Memory Bears

Baby Clothes

Meanwhile, my husband, who’s a bit of a foodie, was delighted with the chutneys, cured sausages and other posh deli foods that adorned epicerie Ludo, Fat Jax and I Heart Jam’s stalls.

Macarons

I’m just waiting to see if I’ve won him the macaron-making masterclass offered by The Real Macaron Company to complement his already finely honed bread baking skills.

afternoon tea

All in all it was a fabulous afternoon and the perfect place to pick up that special gift for someone, or simply to treat yourself.

There was also a raffle for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital so a good cause included too.

I was made up to hear that another is being planned for November – think I’ll just empty the pub cashpoint and do all my Christmas shopping under one roof, finding really gorgeous, unusual gifts whilst also supporting our local businesses. And in case you’re in any doubt about joining me, below is the selection of lovely things we came away with today.

A big thank you to 4ManchesterWomen and The Social Butterfly for this extra special day!

Top tips for perfect party nails

If you want to have a go at getting perfect party nails yourself – here are my top tips:

  • Remove any old nail polish, if any!
  • File nails to desired shape and length, file in one direction to avoid damaging nail.
  • Push cuticles back – soften first with oil or lotion and gently push back.
  • Exfoliate hands with hand scrub to remove any dead skin, then wash hands.
  • Moisturise hands then wipe each nail with nail polish remover to remove any lotion and oil.
  • Apply base coat, this protects the nails and prevents chipping.
  • Now for a splash of colour! Apply chosen colour, being sure to paint down to your cuticles, and into the corner sides of your nails. Try not to touch the sides, but don’t worry  if you do.
  • Wait two minutes between coats.
  • Lastly apply a top coat. This will protect the colour from chipping and give you a beautiful shine.
  • If any polish has gone on your skin, wrap an orange stick end with some cotton wool and with a little nail varnish remover gently remove the stray polish.

See you all soon

We’re shining our An Oasis in the City exhibitor spotlight on Kate today and her award winning company Kaper. Kate makes the most exquisite paper sculptures.

She’s so good that a window display that she did for Harvey Nichols was used as an example of good window dressing in an episode of Mary Queen of Shops!

You’ll find Kate in our Handmade room at An Oasis in the City – make sure you take the time to look at her work.

Let’s meet Kate ……

Kate Kelly makes three dimensional illustrations of wildlife and household objects.

Her work is printed and built by hand so each piece has its own textures and colour palette.

Kate Kelly Kaper

The sculptures are made primarily from screen printed paper.

Other printing methods are also incorporated, such as collagraph and drypoint.

Patterns and textures are hand drawn directly onto the screen or plate, ensuring each model is unique. They are made from very sturdy paper and the shape of the designs gives them extra strength.

They are varnished to seal the edges and protect their colours and vibrancy. Other materials are incorporated when necessary to enhance the design, such as brass wire and plastic elements.

Kaper paper sculptures birds

Kate has always been an avid doodler and her sculptures are an attempt to realise her drawings in three dimensional form; accounting for their bold and cartoon-like style.

She designs her sculptures much in the same way a cartoonist draws, adding simple shapes together. She enjoys building strong, simple shapes which can be embellished in different ways; further emphasizing the individuality of each piece.

Birds are a particular favourite theme because they are so diverse in nature and much of their character can be alluded to in many different ways.

Kate has a studio in Manchester Craft and Design Centre in the Northern Quarter, where she can be found most days making things.

I’m really looking forward to meeting you all at An Oasis in the City and introducing you to my animal paper family.

Our exhibitor spotlight has a lens cap and zoom on it today! Amy’s stunning photographs of Manchester, urban art and spontaneous moments really caught our eye – My Wandering I to be exact!

You’ll find Amy in our Handmade room at An Oasis in the City – make sure you take the time to look at her work.

Let’s meet Amy ……

Amy Lynch

My Wandering I is based on a very simple concept – it’s things that I’ve seen, and liked, and consequently taken pictures of!

My love of photography stemmed from a growing interest in travelling; initially intended to capture memories, until I started to see so much more that inspired me.

Now, I almost always carry my camera around with me because my style is very spontaneous and impromptu and you never know when you might see something you want to look at again and again!

Whether you like graffiti, stunning scenery or iconic Manchester shots, there’s something for everyone.

Bench under tree

Bird graffiti

Manchester Castlefield

Influenced by my love of street art, European travel, my time spent living by the seaside and my recent years living a more urban life in central Manchester, my collection includes individual mounted prints, framed trios and my brand new canvas range, created exclusively for An Oasis in the City.

Manchester rooftop sunset

My Wandering I is intended to inspire.

It might rekindle fond memories, make you want to travel and explore or simply turn out to be something beautiful to brighten up your home.

Either way, I hope that my work gets people thinking, talking and asking questions.

We’ve got Myroslava of Myro Doodles under the An Oasis in the City spotlight today. When we saw Myro’s distinctive greeting card designs we just had to invite her to be one of our fabulous exhibitors. Luckily she said yes!

Let’s meet Myroslava …..

Myro Doodles

I’ve been a doodler ever since I could pick up a pen, starting out drawing on friends with henna and covering everything that could be drawn on with my intricate designs.

People would always remark on my drawings, and it was after finishing a language degree that I decided to embark on making my doodling dreams come true and share my art with the world – Myro Doodles was born!

My work is unique in the fact that all the drawings are done by hand and there are no graphics involved.

My biggest inspiration is mendhi, which I learnt to do as a teenager and covered my arms with – I adore the intricacy, the intense detailing and though I prefer my designs freestyle, I am inspired by the symmetry of the patterns too.

Coming from a Ukrainian background, my art also draws influence from the beautiful folk dancing costumes which are where a lot of my floral designs come from. My work is a mix of intricate detailing, bold flowers, bright colours and plenty of glitter!

Myro Doodles

With Myro Doodles I create greetings cards with a difference – you know that special friend or relative who you always go out of your way to get an extra special card for?

Those are the cards I aim to create.

Because my illustrations are done by hand, they are strikingly different to all the graphics designs on the market; my illustrations always have a touch of the higgledy-piggledy about them, and that makes them stand out against the crowd.

Myro Doodles

I also offer a bespoke card-making service for extra special occasions; in the past, I have designed cards personalised for the bride and groom, with greetings in other languages and for occasions for which there are no or few card choices in the shops.

Whatever the occasion, I can take input from a client and create something beautiful and unique that the recipient can treasure; it’s not just a card, it’s a little piece of art work.

Myro Doodles

As well as greetings cards, I customise recycled Kraft notebook covers with my doodles and also produce canvases with my work. I have just finished my first wedding stationery commission, and am already working on two more – whether it’s your gran’s birthday, a bespoke notebook for your special scribbles, a canvas to brighten your wall or a bit of something different for your wedding day, Myro Doodles can break away from the crowd and give you something a little different.

Myro Doodles is expanding every day, and I feel privileged to be a part of An Oasis In The City alongside other female entrepreneurs. I am living my dream, looking forward to meeting other women who are doing the same, and maybe even inspiring some women to start living theirs.

We’re being very careful again today with our exhibitor spotlight – we don’t want to blind you with dazzling sparkle from Orit at H&D Diamonds!

Orit will be on hand to shine up your precious gems and get them gleaming. Don’t forget to bring your jaded jewellery with you – pop over for a chat and she’ll give them a bit of a buff!

Let’s meet Orit ……

Orit H&D Diamonds

Hi there – I’m Orit and I offer higher quality diamond jewellery than the high street – but for less!

And if you fancy a one-off, I also offer bespoke jewellery to Manchester / Cheshire, which is beautifully crafted by a Bond Street Jeweller.

I began working in the diamond and jewellery trade about ten years ago – working for a diamond dealer in Hatton Garden, London’s diamond centre.

On my first day I was sent to Antwerp, the largest diamond centre in the world, where I learned how to grade diamonds (colour, clarity, carat and cut).

I now have an online shop (handddiamonds.co.uk and a Facebook shop) where I offer higher quality diamonds than the high street, but without the overheads of a shop, which means my prices are much more affordable.

H&D Diamonds jewellery

I recently did the wedding rings for Aiden Byrne the chef who won the North West competition in The Great British Menu on TV (he runs The Church Green in Lymm).

I supplied him with a ready made ring, while his fiancé had a bespoke ring, built around her existing engagement ring – made by my Bond street jeweller. She loved it!

Aiden told me that when he went to look at rings on the high street, he saw a ring which was the same style and width as the one I supplied, but it was much lighter and £150 more expensive!

Proof indeed that I provide higher quality diamond jewellery than the high street – for less!

An Oasis in the City

.
I am really looking forward to meeting so many Manchester women.
.
Come and have a chat if you are thinking about investing in a piece of jewellery.
.
Or bring your existing items and I’ll give them a quick professional clean and have them looking as good as new (£5 for up to two items e.g. ring and earrings / pendant).
.
.
Prize Draw
 .
I’ll also be holding a prize draw on the day for a lovely pair of pearl earrings!
.
.
I’m really looking forward to meeting you all!
